Keeping Your Toddler Entertained – Kitchen Edition

September 04, 2007 (posted by Aline)

This week I’d like to share some fun activities you and your little one can do together. All kids love to play, and we all know they love to play with mommy and daddy the most! But sometimes we run out of ideas, and both mommy and baby get tired of playing with the same old toy over and over.

These fun activities will prevent you and your child from becoming bored during the longest parts of the day, stimulate your child’s natural curiosity and encourage mental and emotional growth.

These days, Frankie and I spend a lot of time in the kitchen. She gets so excited about the prospect of making something with mommy, and appreciates being included in the process. The kitchen can be a great arena for learning–lots of things to see, touch, taste and smell! Always be safety-conscious and watch your child, the typical kitchen is a hazardous place for unsupervised children!

Letter Sandwiches

Alphabet cereal
Sliced wheat bread
Peanut butter, jam or honey

Spread a few slices of bread with peanut butter, jam or honey, help your toddler spell his name or a simple sentence such as “I love you” by applying the appropriate alphabet letters to his slice of bread. Younger children will probably enjoy just sticking the letter onto the bread with no order.

Homemade Play Dough

1 cup flour
1 cup warm water
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon oil
¼ cup salt
Food coloring

Mix all ingredients, adding food coloring last. Stir over medium heat until smooth. Remove from pan and knead until blended smooth. Place in plastic bag or airtight container when cooled. * This will make a fairly large batch; you can cut the recipe in half and add different color to each batch. Will last a long time (throw out every couple of months)

Apple Shake-ups

Apple
Cinnamon
Ziploc bag

Peel and cut apple into bite sizes pieces. Have your child measure 1-2 tablespoons of sugar and ½ teaspoon of the cinnamon and place in the ziploc bag. Add a few apple pieces, seal the bag and shake to coat the apples; enjoy!
