Not a day goes by when I don’t say a little prayer begging the powers at be to prevent my daughter from becoming a successful lawyer, dentist or accountant. I want her to be an artist. In my opinion, artists shape the world we live in and define who we are as a species. They inspire us and provide nourishment for our souls. Granted, artists come in many different varieties, but one way or another they are necessary to our survival.

Until recently, I have been secretly disappointed with my daughter’s artwork. I know, she’s only four. But still. To me it just seemed like she should be farther along by now. Her Nana was an art teacher for decades, still painting professionally and her grandfather is an architect and a painter. But whenever she would come racing down the hallway and thrust her latest work into my hands proudly, waiting intently for my reaction, I would gaze at the dilapidated piece of construction paper covered in Elmer’s Glue, googly eyes and some dog eared purple feather she had found, there was little I could do to conceal my disdain for the work.

Then, yesterday, my whole world changed. As I walked into the kitchen she led me to the laundry room and showed me this.

Look at it! It’s fantastic! Proof, my friends, that there is true brilliance in her after all. After asking my wife “did she really do this?” about 14 times, I snatched the paper off the pantry door where she had taped it and began to dissect it. In addition to the perfect proportion, realism and color-sense she displays, something else…something HUGE…caught my eye. The smile. Look at how its drawn. Teetering perfectly on the edge of whimsical and solemn, the grin almost gives you the feeling that her subject knows something we don’t. As if it has it’s own little secret. I know you are all thinking exactly what I was thinking.

Yes. We know where we have seen that smile before.

You see, my daughter doesn’t even know who da Vinci IS yet. She managed to recreate at four what it took that man a lifetime to arrive at. Clearly, she is gifted and I can sleep at night.

In celebration of this new discovery, I have decided to run a little contest. Its been a while since I’ve given away something from RedSparks, our online baby store, so I think I’ll give it another shot.

As I was browsing through his site for a while, checking out all the comments and all the posts, I was once again reminded of how lowly and small a blogger I am. An old art teacher once told me that “the very worst response once can receive to one’s work is indifference,” and I sometimes feel that may in fact be the case with The Playpen. Until now. All of my blog heroes get completely trashed in their comments on a regular basis. I mean, people just rip them up one side and down the other all day long. Its awesome. The few readers I am fortunate enough to have around here, by contrast, are all so nice. I have been secretly longing for the day when someone, anyone, will take offense with something I have written and flame me, thus signaling that I have, indeed, truly arrived. Yesterday, Danielle (scroll down to the fourth comment) made my dreams come true, and I love her for that. I’d like to personally thank her for taking the time to get to know us before commenting, and also for blasting our business, RedSparks, that we have worked so hard on in order for us to be able to realize our dream of kicking some of our profits back to neonatal care research and charities that benefit pre-term infants with special needs. Today, my friends, Matt has become a man. He has become….a Blogger.

And since she took offense at my plug and the prices of some of our items, I thought I’d throw her a bone. Check out some of our marked down merchandise at RedSparks. One of the “improvements” we made to our site last year was switching from the use of stock photography to actual child models that we photographed in RedSparks clothing. The most successful example of this, and the image set that piqued the most interest, was the daughter of none other than Mr. Lady who, for geographic reasons, shot the photos of her daughter in an outfit we provided herself, rather than us doing a formal photo shoot. They turned out absolutely stunning, and we would like to continue this trend.

That being said, we would like to invite anyone who has a daughter or a son, size preemie through 4T, to participate in the site. The details are very simple:

1. Send either of us an email with a picture of your child or children.
2. Sign a basic model release.
3. Take a few photos of your child in RedSparks clothing, which we provide to you (you get to keep the clothes in exchange for the use of your child’s image)
4. Send the images back to us.
5. Sit back and dream of your child walking the red carpet and rubbing elbows with Brad and Angelina.

Of course, we understand that this type of thing is not for everyone. We take every necessary step to protect the child’s identity and anonymity, but completely respect that many parents do not wish for their children to be pasted all over the web. We have found that, by having the parents shoot photos of their own child, it not only makes things easier on us, but ensures that the parents feel comfortable and in control of how the child is represented. It’s a win win.

And just in case you’re interested in knowing, Mr Lady’s daughter was contacted a day after her pictures went live by Cameron Crowe, and she will be starring as the adorable daughter of Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger in the upcoming Jerry Maguire II, with plans for a sitcom pilot on FOX and a book deal after that. Mr Lady has bought a second home in the Hamptons and spends most of her days lounging in front of the TV watching ChiPs reruns, sipping Chardonnay and eating Hershey’s Treasures.**

So The Playpen has been up and running for a year now. I have learned a lot, and have made a LOT of mistakes (sorry to anyone who’s blog I stalked in the early months. How was I supposed to know there were stats?)

I have also learned that, once in a while, its OK to pay yourself off for all your hard work and writing with a little good natured self-promotion. And, with the current state of economic affairs, what time would be better than now?

We have been open for just over a year and I can honestly say that things are going fairly well. We carry preemie clothes for tiny little boys and girls. We also go all the way up to 4T with infant and toddler merchandise as well. We carry books, toys, accessories and bath and body; everything stylish and hip for babies. The Playpen has been a fantastic experience for us. We’ve met a lot of terrific people and have learned a lot from our readers. It almost seems *hint hint* that our little baby blog here has become more successful than our actual business. Hmm. How did that happen?
